Help with crocheting a blanket?

I want to make a blanket for my boyfriend for christmas. I have Caron simply soft yarn the colors are, black white and red. I was thinking of using two strands of yarn as one to make the blanket a little thicker, but I cant seem to find a pattern. Basically just a solid color blanket, he doesnt want it to have too many "holes" or spaces between the stitches. If anyone has any patterns they will be really appreciated!!
